What is an Ultrasonic Parking Guidance System (PGS)?

An **Ultrasonic Parking Guidance System (PGS)** is a high-precision bay-monitoring network that provides real-time occupancy data for every individual parking space. While ANPR manages the flow of the facility, the Ultrasonic PGS manages the inventory.

At its core, the system utilizes ultrasonic sensors—typically mounted above the center of each parking bay—which emit high-frequency sound waves. By measuring the time it takes for these waves to bounce back from the floor or a vehicle's roof, the sensor determines with 99.9% certainty whether a spot is vacant or occupied.

  • Bay-Level Intelligence: Tracks occupancy at the individual stall level, feeding data directly to variable message signs (VMS).

  • Visual Wayfinding: Coupled with LED indicators (Green/Red/Blue), it guides drivers to available spots in seconds, reducing indoor congestion.

  • Dynamic Reporting: Generates heatmaps and usage patterns, allowing managers to optimize space allocation and pricing.

How Ultrasonic PGS Works

A seamless 4-step technical workflow that transforms acoustic signals into intuitive driver guidance.

Acoustic Detection

The sensor emits 40kHz acoustic pulses. By measuring the Time of Flight (ToF), it determines if a vehicle is occupying the bay based on the return distance.

Visual Indication

Internal processors trigger an ultra-bright LED. It switches from Green (Vacant) to Red (Occupied) instantly to guide drivers at the aisle level.

Data Aggregation

Data flows from sensors to Zonal Control Units (ZCU). Each ZCU manages up to 60 bays, ensuring low-latency communication across the building.

Display Updates

The central controller updates Variable Message Signs (VMS) throughout the facility, providing real-time space counts to incoming drivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between ultrasonic and video parking guidance?

A: Ultrasonic PGS uses high-frequency sound waves for high-accuracy occupancy detection and is more cost-effective for indoor garages. Video PGS uses cameras to detect cars and also offers license plate recognition (LPR) and "Find My Car" features.

Q: Can the LED colors be customized?

A: Yes. KEYTOP sensors feature RGB LEDs that can be configured via management software to display any color (Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, Cyan, Magenta) to identify specific parking categories like VIP or EV charging.

Q: Is the system compatible with outdoor parking?

A: Ultrasonic sensors are best suited for indoor or covered environments. For rooftop or outdoor lots, we recommend our Geomagnetic or Video-based solutions which are built to withstand direct weather exposure.
